Food For Thought
Catherine Burns (BA Hons, Dip ION) is a Nutritional Therapist trained by the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, UK. After marrying her Bermudian husband and moving to the Island she worked in the worksite wellness field for seven years. She is currently the Managing Director of natural ltd - a nutrition consultancy offering preventive health solutions. Catherine has been running Nutrifit since 2007 and has been writing a weekly nutrition column for The Royal Gazette since 2005. Food for Thought began as a factual nutrition column that quickly took on some humour as stories of Catherine's domestic highs and lows crept in. Catherine is mum to two girls (1.5 and 4) who are often perfect examples of healthy living and occasionally the polar opposite. Catherine strives every day to nourish her daughters and to help people in Bermuda lead healthier lives. Please note that Catherine is not a Registered Dietitian. Hangry children after school? Have healthy snacks on standby.
I’m poolside again, but not with my feet up and a cocktail in hand — that would be a luxury for a Tuesday afternoon! Instead I’m watching Belle improve her strokes with iSwim.
Oct 12, 2018 8:00 am
Over the weekend ,Belle had a friend to sleep over. The excitement levels had been at 11 out of ten for weeks and that was nothing compared to the Big Day.
Because it had been a while in the making, every tiny detail had been planned. We...

What are your cravings telling you? I’m writing this from the sofa again ...
Gotta love mobile phones for making it possible to type horizontally. Ironically I’m recovering from a week of launching Beat the Couch and all the admin involved...

I’ve been reading Sapiens, by Yuval Noah Harari lately, and it’s got me in a spin. Before I studied nutrition, I did a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. I loved it and use lots of the concepts to explain addictions and...

I’m writing this from a sofa in London; feet up, Ellen on TV, about to go exploring, then shop, then drinks and dinner. It’s pretty far from ordinary life — there’s zero routine — and it’s seriously relaxing.
I have the background buzz of...

I’m sitting in the car writing this in between appointments, looking at my to-do list and wondering how the hell I’m going to get it done.
I’m on the British Airways flight tonight for my cousin’s wedding, so it’s all in a good cause, but...

Who knew the bunnies would help the kids eat healthier? Despite their names (Sugar Bubble and Oreo Pop …. yes, really) the kids have found it fascinating to research and experiment what the bunnies can eat.
At this age, their main diet is...

Remember how last week I mentioned that this summer will go down in history as the Summer of Slime?
Well, oh my God, did I speak too soon. Let’s replace “slime” with “glitter” and we have a more accurate picture.
Sounds pretty I know,...
Aug 24, 2018 8:00 am
The summer of 2018 will always be remembered in our house as the Summer of Slime. The eight weeks during which my kids became obsessed with making, playing with and generally wallowing in huge quantities of glue and food dye.
If you don’t...

Week two of Natural Kids and this time we’ve got CrossFit Kids going on in the background. Derek Hurdle is putting 25 children through their paces with Moby playing along. There are cues in the song for different exercises.
It’s a little...

Last week, I caved in and bought bunnies for the girls. They’d been doing camp at Wild Island Farm and had got increasingly attached to every living thing.
I caught Belle trying to bring home a chick in her pocket and when Chloe started...

A few weeks into summer and life has slowed down for the better. Traffic is lighter, work is clearer, the evenings are a lot less manic. Bath time, stories and bed are just way easier, so if I could just stop making lunch boxes everything would...
Jun 22, 2018 8:00 am
Short but sweet this week as it’s late, late, late and I’ve still a million things to do before falling into bed.
Laundry, e-mails, make the lunches …. and the list keeps growing as I’m currently watching the dishwasher leak across the...

Last week I was away in England for a big family wedding. My cousin Sarah was getting married and somehow we managed to get every single cousin on my Mum’s side (there are 13 of us) in the same place at the same time. We’d gathered from all over...

Last Sunday, I woke up to the sound of the children arguing over whether or not to wake me. It was 7.43am.
I’d said any time after 7.30am and Belle had been pacing the hallway for 13 minutes absolutely desperate to give me a huge teddy bear...

This week we’re riding the high of wrapping up another round of Beat the Couch. Season 11 brought us an amazing pack of beginner runners and we now have another 60 people on the road.
There are a lot of reasons why I love this programme,...

The problem with training for May 24 right after Flora Duffy wins a triathlon on home soil is that, somehow, it doesn’t feel so impressive.
I went along to watch the race with Belle and we got really lucky. We watched all the cycling at...

You should probably check the obituaries section after this one. I’ve taken on a bit too much and might have died from overload in the interim.

Summer, winter, summer, winter? Who the hell knows any more?!
I arrived at work in boots yesterday, but left in flip-flops. Bermuda’s weather is all over the place and we’ve thrown in some tank rain for good measure.
I arrived at the...

Whose bright idea was it to have Easter and April Fools’ all on the same day? I woke up to maple syrup in the toothpaste, cling-wrapped toilet seats and a whole load of other jokes, courtesy of Chloe, prankster extraordinaire.
I wish I’d...

Fishcakes were never meant to be healthy — or so says my editor.
And I know, I know, she’s right!
But when your fishcake is sandwiched into a hot cross bun with lashings of mayo and a side of mac ’n’ cheese, some damage limitation...

Last week, I bought the children an electronic fish. It’s the best pet we’ve ever had.
From a distance it looks like the real deal and it swims about performing impressive aquabatics (just made that word up)!
There’s no need for food...

Belle is up for adoption. She’s super cute but has been giving me a run for my money lately. We had a stand-off over the iPad yesterday and I ended up having to take it away right at the critical moment.
I was trying to meet a deadline in...

Belle told me I was “on thin ice” this morning. She thinks it’s hilarious to pretend she’s the mom and I’ve done something bad. She also does that thing where she walks past, pauses, looks at me and then indicates she is watching. I’m usually in...

For those of you with children, do you ever wonder how you can raise two children exactly the same way, but get two very different results?
I have one who is cautious and one who is a risk-taker, one that’s sensible and one that runs...

Last night, watching Belle zip around the neighbourhood on her bike, I started thinking about how quickly children pick up new skills. It took me weeks to learn to ride the scooter — I was fine going straight and turning right, but I had a crazy...

The second week of January is always a little tricky. Week one, people are full of enthusiasm and new year’s resolutions, but by week two, they’re back at work and missing a comforting glass of wine at the end of the day.
Dry January or...

Well here we are, it’s 2018 and I wasn’t even ready for 2017 when it began! Time has been flying. Anyone else feel like they would be so much more together if they could just put life on hold short term? Wouldn’t it be great to sort out things...

It’s late, late, late and I’m lying on the sofa with just the lights of the Christmas tree and the glow of my phone keeping me awake. Along with the patio doors, our internet and the toaster, my laptop gave up the ghost today ... why does it feel...

Supergranny and PopPop have landed, so the Christmas countdown has officially begun. Poor things, though, have arrived just in time to take over at the infirmary.
We have two kids with raging fevers and they are feeling very sorry for...

So Christmas is officially on its way and this is my very favourite month of the year. I love everything about it — lights, panto, Michael Buble in the car, mulled wine, the ridiculous over-the-top excitement from the children, planning...

So the big 4-0 has come and gone and I survived with my dignity and liver intact.

Things aren’t always perfect at Natural HQ and this morning was no exception.
